With a combination of fantastic graphics, lovable characters, an exciting and surprisingly complex story and a highly dynamic combat system, Persona 5 convinces in the test all along the line. As a Japanese role playing game, the approach will probably not convince everyone immediately – but if you want to give the genre a chance, you should start with Persona 5.
Japanese roll games are only very rarely successful. A special exception is the recently released Final Fantasy 15 , which also works well in European environments. In April, the next hope-bearer comes: Persona 5. The Shin-Megami-Tensei offshoot was already launched in Japan in September 2016, in the home of the Famitsu mood barometer, 39 of 40 points. The mix of round-based battles, everyday school madness and the cool phantom Thieves must be something to do with. We were able to test a final version of the game very early and have sunk into the JRPG for many days. The result is convincing.
Persona 5 is a relatively classic JRPG, which makes no effort to bend itself for the Western market. At the center is a profound history of human abysses, psychological problems of individuals and a group of young people who have made it their task to fight against injustice. The forbidden desire of the perpetrators is illustrated by a palace, a kind of personal thought-jail, at the center of which lies a treasure which our group must literally steal in order to force repentance and guilt-consciousness. This is why Phantom Thieves is the main character.
The gameplay is divided into three major parts: the round-based battles, which take place in the gloomy and varied thought-parallel worlds of the criminals as well as the chance-based Mementos, play the most part. There we encounter numerous shadowy beings, Solve minor puzzles and meet the king of the palace at any time – that is, the shadow version of the perpetrator himself. Outside the dungeons, social interactions play a major role between the main characters, which tend to be cultivated in and after school. We also spend a lot of time in the legendary Velvet Room, where we optimize our personalities and abilities and thus spend a large part of the role playing part. The gameplay is divided into three major parts: the round-based battles, which take place in the gloomy and varied thought-parallel worlds of the criminals as well as the chance-based Mementos, play the most part. Outside of the extensive dungeons, which are mainly about the protagonists of the story of the perpetrators, we accompany our heroes also in their school and leisure day. The focus here is the development of relationships within our group and individual special characters. These connections not only give us interesting insights into the sentimental situation of Phantom Thieves, but also provide bonuses for the further development of our personas. In addition, the protagonist has “social skills” such as knowledge, perseverance or charm that we can improve in school and after class.
For example: we can visit Tokyo’s Shibuya district, which offers a wide range of shops, diners and facilities to help us. Each activity consumes time – so we usually have two slots per day (“after school” and “in the evening”) to either spend time with a friend or improve our skills.
